What to expect from a branding session with Beautiful Edge Photography

You have decided your business would benefit from branding photography (I agree wholeheartedly!). You have done your research, found the perfect photographer (if it's not me then this just got awkward) so....now what?

 HOMEWORK

The first thing that we would put together is information about your business and your objectives.   I've created an easy to use on-line questionnaire or we can schedule an in-person meeting or a call, whatever is most convenient to you. I need to understand your brand, which means YOU need to understand your brand, so that I can create a custom experience for you and you will get the result you are looking for during our time together.

But what if I am not sure of what my brand is?

The point of the questionnaire is to help you focus in on the aesthetic and messaging of your business - to define your "brand identifiers".  Having this information is going to benefit you long term, not only when it comes to photographs, but in all aspects of your business.  Completing the questionnaire will take some time and thought, I really encourage my clients to fully engage in the process and allow themselves to drill down in order to make the sessions as successful as possible.

If you already have a well-established brand then it may simply be a case of ensuring that your current messaging and photographs are on-point and then recreating the same look and feel but with a fresh perspective.

Once completed, this information will go into your customized Brand Review.  It will become your guidepost as you move forward in marketing your business.

PLANNING THE SESSION

We will work together to determine the right location, time of day, color palette and props to use in your session.  We will also determine at this point if you want to include other team members or even hire outside talent in order to showcase what we've determined will be most effective for your goals. If there is a product you want photographed or "action" shots we will make sure we detail those out well in advance of our session.  A comprehensive shot list will be given to everyone that is participating in the session.

If you are working with a web designer this is a great time to bring them into the mix.  They may have specific compositions they need for your site, perhaps a banner or a specific direction you need to be facing for a particular set up.  All of those details are very important and should be included on the shot list.

VARIETY IS KEY

I know it's sometimes hard enough to select ONE outfit when having photos done, but I am going to ask you to have at least 5 or more at the ready.  You need to get the most mileage out of our time together so we can't have you in the same outfit in every photo, it just simply wouldn't make sense.  A good branding session has to have longevity.  So variety in your wardrobe, accessories and props will help with that.  Depending on your objectives we may shoot in your home, office or at an event - or all three - and we want to make the most out of each location.

PREPARE YOUR LOCATION AND YOUR TEAM

Once we have determined where we are going to photograph your session you will want to spend some time decluttering.  A clean backdrop is always going to make for the most successful session.  If we have to spend a lot of time cleaning before we get started there will be much less time to actually capture the images.  We also want to make sure that your schedule, as well as any other team member or family member that is involved, is clear and you have set aside the time to dedicate to the process.  These sessions are not something you can "fit in" between client visits.  Similarly, if we are shooting in your home it will be important to have planned child care and/or to have someone watch your pets if they tend to be underfoot.  Don't short change yourself, schedule the time in your calendar and be prepared to invest your energy and focus for the length of the session.

Communicate clearly to others that will be participating about the time commitment, as well as with direction on what they should wear, what the schedule of the day will look like, what will be expected of them and how they can best prepare.  Directing multiple people is a challenge in any setting so it is best to ensure everyone comes with a positive attitude and is prepared to be a willing participant in the process.

In the end these sessions will allow you to create an entire catalog of images that can be used for social media, your website, printed marketing material as well as bios for speaking engagements.  If we put the time and energy into the planning and the execution then you will be left with tangible assets that will add value to your business.

I can't wait to get started!
